Some Minneola History
In 1884, the survey and map of the town of Minneola were obtained. Both the town and the lake were named Minneola after the Dakota Indian word meaning “Many Waters” A sawmill, brickyard, drugstore, church, grocery store, hospital, and railroad, were all established in the following years as the community grew. Eventually, Minneola became known for its flourishing citrus groves. However, the hard winter freezes of the late 1980’s brought disaster to the citrus industry.
